Big Leech Patterns for Michigan Steelhead

Fly Pattern: The Clown Egg

Egg flies for Steelhead Clown Egg
  • Size 4 to 10 TMC 105
  • Bright thread, whatever you prefer
  • Combination of 4 to 5 different yarn colors
  • Personal favorite (OC, steelhead orange, chartreuse, egg, and cherise) or Lemon Parade
  • Cut yarn to desired size

The Clown Egg is a great alternative to traditonal egg patterns that are out on the market. The Clown Egg can be tied in a variety of color combinations to match water clarity and fish preference. Below is a color combo that has been working great on the Big Manistee this fall. I call the color combo below "Lemon Parade".

1. Start with 4 different colors of Glo-Bug yarn. Lemon Parade consists of Niagra Gold, Egg, Steelhead Orange, and Oregon Cheese. Clip the 4 differnet colors of Glo-Bug yarn so they are about an inch long.

2. Next divide the 4 different colors into sections, pull apart the Glo-Bug yarn so you have 4-6 seperate piles. If water clarity is poor and you want big eggs divide into 3 or 4, if it is dead of winter and water clarity is crystal clear and you need small eggs make 5 or 7 seperate piles. What is great about the Clown Egg is that you can make your own color combo and own size depending on your condtions.

3. Now tie your thread to the front part of the hook. I like TMC 105 in size 4-10. Use bright thread that will match the color combo you have choosen, for the Lemon Parade I use orange thread.

4. Tie in the Glo-Bug yarn, wrap the thread in a figure eight around the Glo-Bug yarn. Almost like a wing for a spinner pattern.

5. Pull back on the yarn tight with your fingers and clip the excess with a sharp pair of scissors. I try and match where I clip the yarn to the bend or point of the hook.

6.Finished Clown Egg "Lemon Parade", getting a round egg is not the goal.
