SALMON STREAMER PATTERN

STEP-BY-STEP FLY TYING INSTRUCTIONS OF JR'S "WHOA NELLY"

JR's Salmon "Whoa Nelly" Material List

  • TMC 600 SP Size 2-6/0
  • Lead Wire
  • Bucktail 2 Different Colors, whatever you want
  • Saddle Hackle
  • Ice Dub for body
  • Flashabou 10-20 strands

Step 1:Insert TMC 600SP
Step 2: Get your Lead Wire ready

Step 3: Cut 3-7 lead strips, the length of the hook shank
Step 4: Secure your tying thread to the hook shank

Step 5: Fasten a piece of lead to each side of the hook shank
Step 6:Layer two more pieces of lead to the hook shank, now you should have 4 pieces of lead along the hook shank

Step 7: Put one more piece of lead right down the middle of the hook shank
Step 8:Tie in a clump of buck tail, to help keep the saddle hackle from fouling the hook!

Step 9:Tie in your first Saddle Hackle, curve side out.
Use this diagram to help you better understand what your trying to accomplish!

Step 10: Continue tying in your Saddle Hackles, here you can see the curve side out, this will give your fly great movement.
Step 11: Cut off the excess Saddle Hackle, your streamer is starting to take shape.

Step 12: Tie in a Chartreuse Saddle Hackle
Step 13: A dubbing loop of white/pearl Ice Dub, this will give your fly body.

Step 14: Finished dubbed body
Step 15: Wrap your Saddle Hackle forward, get the webby stuff in the fly, this will give you movement and life in your fly.

Step 16: Time for FLASH! I like the wing look
Step 17: Tie in your buck tail tips facing forward

Step 18: Tie in your second clump of buck tail, tips facing forward
Step 19: Pull your Buck tail back, and start wrapping your thread in front.

Step 20: Keep on wrapping your thread in front of the buck tail, this way you will use less buck tail than you normally would. It will give you a big profile, with less bulk from the buck tail. Since deer hair is a buoyant material, and getting deep for King Salmon is key, the less we can use the better. To learn more about how to tie buck tail this way, check out this article.
